ABC premiered Defying Gravity, a sci-fi show that comes from the people who brought us Grey's Anatomy, so ABC hopes it has hit written all over it. Given that it's sci-fi, I just hope it's something I can watch and not another Century City.

The premise: Eight astronauts are chosen by the International Space Organization (ISO) to visit seven planets in the solar system in six years. And in the tradition of Noah (not NOAA), there are four men and four women, so that they can pair off and reproduce mankind. But two of them appear to be gay, so at least two of the others are S.O.L. They didn't expressly say that in the pilot, but this is from the producers of Grey's Anatomy, so indulge me in my extrapolation.

Also on board is the mysterious Beta. We, the viewers, are not told what Beta is. It could be an alien intelligence. It could be a supercomputer. It could be my father's old videotape machine.

Most of the astronauts don't know it exists, but it is clear early on that Beta calls the shots. It decides it wants the two alternates to come for the trip, and causes irregular heartbeats in the mission commander and flight engineer to get them there.

This show has been billed in every blurb I’ve read as “Grey’s Anatomy” in space – and that’s a very accurate description. It has the same soapy, sex-filled feel, and emphasizes flirtatious character drama over intriguing sci-fi action or plot. “Grey’s Anatomy” is a hospital show, and this is a space show, but it certainly doesn’t feel like it. Part of the problem is that the liaisons on ground are featured almost as much as the crew, and flashbacks to before the mission are spotlighted extensively so that little of the first two hours actually plays out in space itself. Several of the characters, especially those portrayed by Ron Livingston and Laura Harris, are the clear stars of the show, while others like Paula Garces are reduced to speaking Spanish and interviewing other members of the crew, because they’re clearly deemed to be more interesting than her.

Tuned In: ABC debuts 'Defying Gravity' a sci-fi-tinged soap PDF Print E-mail

A studio executive described ABC's astronaut drama "Defying Gravity" as "Grey's Anatomy" in space. And it's true: The space scenarios in "Gravity" often defy common sense and are just as ludicrous as the medical workplace hijinks on "Grey's."

If you can stomach over-the-top, unrealistic plot turns -- and millions of viewers do every week when they watch "Grey's" -- "Gravity" is an entertaining enough sci-fi-tinged soap, complete with astronauts having sex while floating in zero gravity.

"Gravity" (9-11 tonight, WTAE) even has its own Meredith and McDreamy. She's geologist Zoe Barnes (Laura Harris, "24"), the only member of the Antares crew who hears a baby's cries echo through the spaceship. Zoe had a one-night stand with "Gravity's" narrator and McDreamy stand-in, chief engineer Maddux Donner (Ron Livingston, "Band of Brothers"). Zoe got pregnant and possibly had an abortion -- illegal in 2052 America, it turns out.

ABC's new science fiction drama "Defying Gravity" takes eight astronauts on a dangerous six-year mission to explore the Solar System and each other.

"In space, there's simply no room for error," barks a mid-21st-century astronaut stomping around his spaceship in ABC's new sci-fi series, "Defying Gravity." In television, of course, there is plenty of room for error; sometimes it seems like one big errormobile.

Unfortunately, "Defying Gravity" will have to be listed as one of its well-intentioned mistakes, another of the many peculiar oddities churned out by broadcast and cable every year, every week, every moment of our earthbound little lives. While "Defying Gravity" might be a good title for a sitcom set in outer space, the gravity being defied here is of a more sober, serious, scientific sort.

First Look: My Review of ABC’s Defying Gravity PDF Print E-mail

The rest of the world is giving US a break. This summer, three series were sold to the United States that were funded and produced outside which gave us both brand new programming at a reduced rate. The first flopped in Mental on FOX, the third comes to NBC next year called ‘Persons Unknown‘, and the second premieres on ABC tomorrow. Check out my review of ABC’s Defying Gravity.

What ABC says: “From executive producers James Parriott and Michael Edelstein comes “Defying Gravity,” a sexy, provocative space thriller set in the very near future against the background of our solar system, in which eight astronauts from five countries (four women and four men) undertake a mysterious six-year international space mission covering eight billion miles. The adventure begins on SUNDAY, AUGUST 2 with a two-hour premiere from 9:00-11:00 p.m. The series will air regularly from 10:00-11:00 p.m., starting Sun, August 9 on the ABC Television Network. Hurtling into the vast challenge of infinite space, the eight astronauts and the ground personnel who support them are on a mission that has a powerful and awesome mystery at its core.
